Julien Delagrange (born in 1994 in Kortrijk, Belgium; resides and works in Harelbeke, Belgium) is best known for his oil paintings and charcoal drawings. Human figures and art historical references populate an often surreal scenery. Delagrange examines the human condition from an anthropological perspective, focusing on the internal conflict that arises as mechanisms of our often-forgotten primitive nature are ignored or suppressed because they no longer fit within a civilized, secular, globalized, and technological world. At the same time, we lack new mechanisms or belief systems to cope with the challenges this rapidly changing world presents: from our inherently human, often irrational urges for beauty, the sublime, existential meaning, and the transcendent, to the role of art as one of the few remaining spaces where these urges can still be explored.
Julien Delagrange was trained as an art historian, holding an MA in the Science of Arts (magna cum laude) from Ghent University, Belgium. He is represented by Galerie Sabine Bayasli in Paris, France, and Space60 in Antwerp, Belgium. Notable solo exhibitions include Human Preservation (2021) at Verduyn Gallery in Moregem, Belgium; Dark Matter (2022) at Space60 in Antwerp, Belgium; The Dream (2022) at Galerie Sabine Bayasli in Paris, France; Rites Oubliés (2024) at Galerie Sabine Bayasli in Paris, France; and Artificial Empathy (2024) at Space60 in Antwerp, Belgium. Delagrange was selected as a finalist for the Prix Artistique de la Ville d’Antoing (2024) in Antoing, Belgium. Delagrange has worked for the Centre for Fine Arts (Bozar) in Brussels, Belgium; the University Library in Ghent, Belgium; the Jan Vercruysse Foundation in Brussels, Belgium; and is the founder of the hybrid art platform Contemporary Art Issue (CAI). As a result, Delagrange has contributed as a freelancer to exhibition catalogs, magazines, galleries, and educational programs as an art critic, guest lecturer, and writer—actively contributing to the debate on contemporary art as both an artist, critic, and educator. Notable publications as an author include ART.BE (2025) published by MER. Books/Borgerhoff & Lamberigts in Ghent, Belgium; Funny Games (2023) published by DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, Czech Republic; and High on Hope (2022) published by Crosslane Projects in Kendall, the United Kingdom.
